That image first appeared in the 1879 Plymouth County Atlas, the Rand McNally of its day, on the portrait page dedicated to each town. Beneath the Narrows Village scene are drawings of the Toby Homestead and the Besse House.
Each town also got a road map and village snapshot identifying its home owners; in Wareham's case, the Narrows, Agawam and Tremont villages.
Wareham is the only town in the county, far as I can tell, that still looks largely the same.

Funny you should ask. I'm guessing these herring chokers ditched work early Friday to drink, trade insults and clam, apparently without permits. "You're that newspaper guy," one said and they all freaked. It was cloudless, 72º, a light chop and more harbor traffic than I saw all summer.
I bought a shellfish permit in March and tested several once promising clam flats without much luck, including this one on Long Beach. Most everywhere, clams were over fished and under sized. "They're legal," another of their number insisted.
An earlier era's hooligans routinely drug Swifts Beach lifeguard chairs to Long Beach for their debauched amusements.

A great place to clam was just before the seminary on Great Neck Rd. There's a dirt road just before it that leads to their boathouse and beach. The clamming there was always good.
