Please join us for the Board of Selectmen’s meeting on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 7pm for a presentation on the Final Action Plan drafted by the participants of the Wareham Nitrogen Consensus.  This plan outlines recommendations, both immediate and long-term, that the town can take to reduce nitrogen pollution in Wareham’s coastal waters and your role is an important component.

Recognizing that numerous unsuccessful proposals had been made at Wareham Town Meeting about how the town might manage the nitrogen pollution degrading its coastal waters from septic systems and cranberry bogs, a small group of concerned citizens took the initiative to invite 50 other active Wareham residents to participate in a series of meetings to actively think through various local solutions to the nitrogen problem.  From December 2009 to June 2010, this group met on a monthly basis to discuss the problem and possible solutions and to develop an Action Plan.  The final product will be presented to the Board of Selectmen by the Coalition for Buzzards Bay, the conveners of the consensus process, at our August 24th meeting and we hope that you can attend. 

The one thing that bound the participants in the Wareham Nitrogen Consensus effort together was their collective belief that each has a direct interest in seeing nitrogen pollution reduced and coastal water quality in Wareham restored.  We hope that you also share in this belief.  Wareham has over 54 miles of coastline enhanced by beaches, estuaries, rivers and ponds and it is critical that we restore clean water in Wareham in order to sustain and protect this valuable resource for future generations.

We hope that you support this initiative by attending the presentation on August 24, 2010.  If you are unable to attend, the Coalition can present  it to the (Board) at a more convenient time.
