The reason I started to post on this site was because of the outrageous  presentation Marcia Griswold made about the seniors in town during the selectman’s meeting Feb 24 2009  I knew none of her numbers made sense and it took me all of five minutes to get the correct information from the internet.

On Feb 10 2009 Marcia makes the statement that 76% of our seniors live on or below the poverty level. Not one selectman questions these numbers and they invite her back for a full presentation.

Feb 24 2009Marcia again says 76% of our seniors are living at the poverty level and that Wareham has 9000 seniors. Wareham has a little over 20,000 residents which would mean according to Marcia; almost half of the people living in Wareham are seniors. Again not one of the selectman questions these numbers.

March 31 2009 Mr. Heaton gives his presentation on the seniors in town his numbers are completely different from Marcia’s outrageous numbers. Not one selectman said anything about how his numbers were so different from Marcia’s misinformation.

How can a COA director help the seniors in town if she doesn’t even know how many seniors live in town and how many seniors are living in poverty?

How could our current selectman listen to such outrages statements and think they could be true. Don’t they know what the current population of Wareham is? Bruecy never questioned Marcia’s numbers he only used it as a way to promote Westfield.

I found these numbers as Mr. Heaton did from the census bureau (2006-2008)

Number of seniors living in town:

65 years and over    3,601    +/-421    17.4%    +/-2.0

65 years and over    3,601    +/-421    3,601    (X)
Male    1,634    +/-268    45.4%    +/-5.5

Female    1,967    +/-311    54.6%    +/-5.5

If you included people who are 55 it would still not add up to 9000 seniors.

55 to 59 years    1,451    +/-343    7.0%    +/-1.5
60 to 64 years    1,332    +/-321    6.5%    +/-1.6
65 to 74 years    2,020    +/-388    9.8%    +/-1.8
75 to 84 years    1,312    +/-311    6.4%    +/-1.5
85 years and over    269    +/-120    1.3%    +/-0.6

Poverty levels:
The per capita income for the town was $21,312. 10.7% of the population and 8.1% of families were below the poverty line. 16.6% of those under the age of 18 and 13.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

I have been trying to figure out where the heck she came up with that 76% number. The only thing I can think of is that maybe 76% of the seniors in Wareham collect social security, but that does not mean that they are living at the poverty level. They have other sources of income. I have no idea where she came up with the 9000 seniors living in Wareham.

The 76% number is unbelievably outrageous yet no one said a word. Detroit which is one of the poorest cities in the country has a poverty rate for seniors of a little less than 18%.

Marcia is the COA director and doesn’t even know how many seniors live in town. How can you help the seniors if you don’t even know how many people you are trying to help?

We used to have a part time licensed social worker but that job was eliminated. Although Marcia has a person listed in the senior beacon as an outreach worker. That person is not a licensed social worker and she doesn’t drive. I have always thought of an outreach worker as someone who goes out into the community. The social worker we used to have actually went out into the community to check on the elderly.

Pspan I found Marcia on the Feb. 10 archive. She is only on for about two minutes. You can find it on Feb 10 archive part 3 at 12:59 / 34:56. Thank you for posting the archives

Great presentation maybe Brenda can teach her power point. She does have a pie chart showing 76% but there is no reference at the top of the page as to where the chart came from. Since it is followed by social security charts, it could be a chart showing that 76 % of the seniors living ONLY on social security are living at the poverty level. I don't know I'm tired of trying to figure it out. Jane does try to question her about one of the chart and you can hear the bristle in Marcia’s voice. I was told the next day at the office Marcia asked the staff why Jane would question her numbers quote “what is she some kind of brainy-ack (sp)” Also mentioned are all those infamous grants Marcia was writing none of which were ever funded. Didn’t someone say she was hired for her grant writing expertise?

Thanks again P-Span for all your hard work. Showing Mr. Heaton’s presentation after Marcia’s helps show all of her inaccurate statements.

I tend to agree with Marny regarding the chart.  If this indeed comes via the Social Security charts, they would have no knowledge of pensions or savings of these seniors.   Also, we have a large concentration of seniors in West Wareham because we have Royal Crest, Great Hill and the mobile home parks behind Cumberland Farms.  They already have homes and I can not see them moving from their mobile homes to Westfield where they will pay more for rent than they do for lot fees.  It is a shame that some people believe what is presented without any proof, because it is in the newspaper or at a selectmen's meeting.

Marcia did not take into consideration how many of our seniors already life in affordable housing both public and private. or in nursing homes. the census counts them all and they are the ones that respond the best. Just like voting the seniors turn out or vote by absentee ballot. They are well represented they gave up a lot for the right.

Kinsailman is correct about some of the seniors in town. I think Wareham is very unique in the fact that there are quite a few seniors who live with there families. Three of my friends live with their children. Although they only collect social security they live with their families who support them, they are not living at poverty level. It’s not that I don’t believe we have some seniors living in poverty we do, I would like to know the correct number that need our help.

I do believe there is a waiting list for affordable housing in Wareham. The key word is AFFORDABLE I don’t understand how $1000.00 a month or more is considered AFFORDABLE!!! Anyone can put themselves on the waiting list for affordable housing, as long as they financially qualify. What I would like to know is how many of the people on the waiting list are actually from Wareham? Where are those people living now? It’s not that I don’t want everyone to have affordable housing if we know how many seniors in Wareham are in need we should try and reach out to those people. Like I said if you don’t know the correct numbers how can you help
