Because Sanguinet reduced the library hours last year to 25 (under the minimum of 41 that it had to be opened), the library will automatically lose its certification (announcement will come in early 2010). The hours requirement is a separate statute from how much money the town appropriates. The Friends fulfilled the third requirement on spending on books and materials. So it is just the hours requirement that we need help with and it needs to be done through the legislature.
Jane Donahue informed the former acting director that she has been in contact with Marc Pacheco to pass special legislation to get us a waiver of the hours statute. (Randolf did this successfully when it was decertified.)
So, we need your help in contacting Mr. Pacheco to urge him to move the legislation along that will get the Wareham Free Library certified. Please take a few minutes to send him an email:
STATE SENATOR
MARC R. PACHECO
State House
Room 312-B
Boston, MA 02133
Telephone: (617) 722-1551
State House E-Mail Address: Marc.Pacheco@state.ma.us
Thanks everyone. Ask your friends and family to send an email too. This is so important to our community and to you all, taxpayers who deserve a full service library.
Edit to clarify: We were only closed to 25 hours a week for a short time last fall. The Friends donated $20,000 to the town for salaries, and the library's hours were returned to 41. The legislation will give us a pass for the time we were under 41 hours. So, please encourage Mr. Pacheco to file and support the Wareham Free Library legislation. Thanks again!!

I wrote this original post on Oct. 22. As you all know, the chances of this bill getting out of committee by Dec. 31 is not great and the library will be decertified again.
But, since we still have a few weeks left, please take the time to email Mr. Pacheco (you must give him your name in the email) or call him to ask him to push this through.
We need to do everything we can to help our library get certified.
Thanks.

Senator Pacheco will be at the multi-service building on Friday (or at least his staff) if anyone wants to visit in person.

This looks good folks. Thanks to anyone who talked to the Senator, or his office staff. This is from Ms. Herrick, the senator's district director:
The legislation is out of committee and is now with the Senate Ways and Means Committee. The Senator is cautiously optimistic that the bill will get to the floor of the Senate next week. Senator Pacheco also would like you to know that the Library Board of Commissioners has deferred any decertification until their meeting on February 4th. I hope this clarifies where the bill is now and how it looks for the future.
KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED!!

Maybe it's time we start directing our emails and letters to Mr. Andrews? I cannot understand how a registered letter could sit that long? We need competent leadership and we need to start that process now.
