I came across an article in Thursday's Wall Street Journal (Oct. 1, 2009).  Just thought you all might enjoy a rainy day chuckle.

Tampa Florida has an annual Moral Courage Award that the county commissioners are supposed to give to "someone with the guts to fight the county commission."  Last year, the commissioners voted to change the name the award after a man who was recently deceased but was a big anti-tax campaigner.

The vote to name the award after this guy "provoked an outbreak of moral outrage" in Tampa because the dead guy was "locally famous for funding the elections of county commissioners." But the commissioners didn't back down and withheld the vote to name the award, The Ralph Hughes Moral Courage Award.

Why should this interest you, you might ask?  Turns out, this anti-tax guy's estate was sent a bill by the IRS in July for unpaid taxes amounting to $69.3 million. Then the US Dept. of Justice filed a suit claiming the guy's companies owed more, so the total came to $299.3 million.

Ok, so $181,000 is nothing compared to multi-millions. But I couldn't ignore the comparison. And the irony of naming an award after a financial supporter was too much to ignore.

Wouldn't it be fun to create a Wareham Moral Courage Award for the brave soul who "has the guts" to fight the local bos?  Any nominations?

Thanks Dan. But I think you should only be nominated if you are brave enough to use your own name. I fear retaliation so I go Molly, but I still feel like a coward by using my screen name instead of standing up. No guts, no glory!

How about an award for the first brave soul who offers a feasible suggestion for rebuilding from the wreckage these morons will leave behind?

They've gutted each and every town department from the top down and from the bottom up. And they've demoralized educated voters to the point they don't give a crap.

It's time to stop fighting, guys. You won.

In celebration, I would like to invite all you "family" members to join me
and others between 12:30 and 1:30 o'clock at Nana's in Onset to benefit
the Spinney Library by devouring your favorite flavor ice cream.
Come one, come all and bring the kids in the neighborhood.
See you there.

Dan O,  What flavor is your favorite ?  We'll send it down in a refrigerated box truck.  Did you want that in a cone or cup ?

Thanks, Bob. I guess I will have to take a rain check, but I am there in spirit with you all.
Molly...you have nothing to apologize for or be ashamed of. I am sickened by the many friends that I have had for my whole life being harassed by a group of malcontent, vicious, reprehensible, arrogant bullies that prey on those that can't fight back for obvious reasons.
When you TAKE BACK WAREHAM you, and everyone else, will feel proud and comfortable in announcing who you are.
You deserve the respect you have earned. Molly, you are one of my favorite posters. I enjoy every thing that you write. You are a leader of this site, and I appreciate you and all that you do for the people of Wareham.
Someday I hope to shake your hand and thank you in person.
I am proud to "know" you.

Thanks Dan. This is a group effort on this site and I believe we will be successful in making this a better place to live. Your encouragement is well appreciated.

If, in fact, the bos were having a meeting today that violated open meeting law, I'd nominate the person who took a photo (please tell me someone got a photo) and brings it forward, to get the Moral Courage Award.
