BOSTON -- Wareham's Crime Watch director was released on personal recognizance pending assault and battery charges Monday after he allegedly drove a vehicle into a pedestrian on Friday.

George Coleman, 70, was accused of driving his Crime Watch vehicle into the legs of Pamela Miller, who had taken her children to a free lunch program at the Onset band shell last week, the South Coast Today reported.

Miller and a number of witnesses said that Coleman called Miller "stupid and retarded," according to a police report, after a dispute about where she parked her truck. Witnesses said Coleman drove his car toward Miller and struck her at low speed on her legs.

Coleman was arrested at the scene. He faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

Check out some of the comments on The Boston Channel story You have to wait a few seconds for them to open.

The story will die out soon, but for now unfortunately for Coleman and his supporters and the reasonable and responsible Crime Watch volunteers( there must be some) it makes for a decent tabloid style headline.
