Hello to all. The Wareham Police Union website has been updated with recent highlights from the activities of the hard working men and women of the Wareham Police Department. Some incidents made the news, while others did not. Check out warehampoliceunion.com and go to the blog section on the website to view the stories. Hopefully updates will occur every week or two to keep the public informed.

You can try the Standard Times. The unedited police log is all they're publishing anymore, unless someone sends them a press release. Looks like their Wareham reporter, Jennifer Lade, is AWOL, too, not that anyone will notice.

Actually I think those were press releases. The police log entries on the department website are a lot more vague but they still give you a little bit of an idea of what is going on in town.

Officer Bryan Whalen saw a motor vehicle pass him on Main Street and the passenger, who was known to Whalen, was drinking a Coors beer, police said.

Officer Whalen was later seen shaking his head in digust and overheard muttering the words, "Shit for brains, the both of them!"

OK people, this is 2009. The country we live in today is not the same world we grew up in. We are surrounded by so much crime from day to day, that I think we have become numb to it. So many people are quick to point there fingers at the local Law Enforcement for problems that they see. But at any one time there might be 5 cops on the street on a shift. Now, look at the size of our town now,(not what it used to be when most of us grew up) and we expect 5 individuals to be right where we need them 100% of the time. It can't happen. Sure they do a great job and provide the best protection they can with the resources the town allows them. But 5 individuals in no way shape or form, be everywhere all the time. Listen to a scanner some time. A cop will be sent to a barking dog complaint at 2 am in Rose Point, another will get sent to check on a loud stereo near Little Harbor, and another is stopping a speeding car in White Island. Now when Store is robbed on Main Street the PD has to race to the scene from the farthest points of town in hopes of catching the bad guy. People will complain it took the Cops to long to get there, or there should have been more cops in the area. Yet the people who placed the calls these officers were on consider their calls just as important and want action taken. So I ask, is 5 officers enough to patrol the ever growing streets of Wareham? We would all be fools to think it would be enough. What happens when there are numerous arrests and it takes all the on duty officers to transport the prisoners to the station. hmmmm I guess the town watches itself.
Also, don't think Wareham is ammune from the Drug Wars, people, its everywhere. You name it and you can get it in Wareham. I know it doesn't effect all of us, until our own kid comes home taliking about seeing a dealer sell his wares at the end of the street, then we want action. Face it we have outgrown or PD. We did this years ago. Sooner or later, someting will happen and all the NAY SAYERS will scratch their heads and say " Well if we had more cops this wouldn't have happened"  BS!!!! This should never be said! Be pro active not re active!! This is 2009.  ....... sorry... just venting again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some very good points were made above. It has been said that police work can go from complete boredom to adreneline pumping action in the matter of a few seconds. Sure there are stretches of time during a police shift that not much is going on and the cops are available to respond to any calls that may come in. Then there are also many times where many calls come in and there are not enough officers to handle those calls so either there is a delayed response or an officer is sent without backup. Example : The police shift is at minimum staffing levels which means a total of 5 cops are able to respond to calls. Now here comes the calls - The nurses at the hopspital call for help with a combative and violent psych patient in the hospital emergency room and that requires at least two officers. Then a call for a domestic violence situation up in shangrila comes in so two officers are sent to that. The situation is out of control with people screaming and fighting, resisting arrest, so back up is called for and another officer responds up there. Now every cop is busy and a bad car accident happens on Cranberry Highway near McDonalds. Who do you send? Help will come....eventually. I know it sounds extreme but any avid listener of a police scanner will tell there are times that their scanner will not stop squawking.

Not to mention an arrest can take a cop off the street for anywhere between 1-3 hours or more, depending on the circumstances of the arrest. Then there are the prisoners that fake medical problems so they can get out of their cells and go lay in a nice cozy hospital bed all night while a cop has to guard them. So there are plenty of times where there may be only one or two cops able to respond to calls in the whole town. There are even times when there may be no cops available to respond to calls. So if you need help from the police hopefully it will be during a lull in the action and you will have a timely and adequate response. But if they are busy you may have to wait longer than you should. Especially if you live at the far reaches of town like shangrila, white island, little harbor, county road, rose point and so on. We should be hiring cops not considering laying them off.

Not to get technical TBl but minimum manning is 5 for shifts and 1 officer is always inside working the desk or station so only 4 officers are available on the road to respond to calls at any given time...

I was counting the shift supervisor as the 5th officer on the road because he can answer some calls or back up officers if he is available. But as supervisors they also have some administrative duties. Either way the police minimum staffing levels need to be increased by at least another two cars on the road.

Having grown up in this town, I have seen this town explode in size. But the WPD has the same amount of cruisers on the road as there were when I was a kid. A new high school was built to accomidate the growth, Cranberry Plaza (aka Wal-Mart Plaza) was once just Angelos supermarket, now its full blown shopping center, to accomidate the growth of the town. Condo units were few and now many, to accomidate the growth of the town. Industrial parks were built to accomidate industry and growth. Now a mall. So why does everything grow except the agency resposible for protecting all of this and us?????? I know, we all go to the mall, we all have kids in school, and we all need a place to live, but not all of us need the help of our local PD. Ahhhh, but should we need them and not get them ASAP, then we complain. We speed through town and get a ticket, so they suck. They arrest my kid for underage drinking and it harrassment. We are a selfish society. If it dosen't directly effect us we don't need it. I hope I never have to use any of our Emergency Services, but I do feel alot better knowing they are there, properly staffed and properly trained and properly equipped to help me if I need them. We all want the best, yet we all want it for free. The days of FREE have long been gone. When gas hit $4.00 last year we all complained ,yet we still all drove. Why, because we had to. So why is it so hard to spend a few bucks more a year to ensure our town is safe????? Why, because not everyone needs a cop. But because we feel we deserve the best, we just assume there will be one sitting at the end of our road waiting to serve us at the drop of a dime. And they will serve at the drop of a dime, they just might not be as close as you had hoped. How about all the money we all spend on the Space Station? We will never see the inside of it, yet its our money they use, but no complaints. Instead of complaining, voice your concern for the lack of policemen on the road!!!!

the problem is ems,the school dept the fire dept the poop plant  school busing are either proteced by law or are special funded, so when their are cuts in spending their are not many places to cut the budget from. we  pass laws when times are good that we really cant afford such as the 3 % tax on property., mandatory health care law only one in the nation and on top of that we elect a board of selectmen who are lunatics , what can we expect these selectmen most of them have had problems with the law and dont want more cops to go after them.
