The last brush burning day is Sunday, May 1. Permits, free until this year, now cost $10.

Wareham Fire Department's Open Burning restrictions and allowances are specific but oddly omit the most common yard rubbish, at least where I live; fallen limbs and invasive exotics, thorny parasites that choke the life out of woodlots and gardens hereabouts.

Burning is only permitted during favorable atmospheric conditions and you must call between 9am and noon to request permission. Burn hours are 10am to 4pm.

Both the office and telephone of the downtown fire station were clogged with last minute firebugs Saturday morning.
