More local libraries will have the chance to get state certification or a waiver, thanks to more lenient regulations from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, which take into account the difficult financial times most communities are facing.

Also on Dec. 3, the MBLC voted to allow the Wareham Free Library to keep its state certification until Feb. 3. Bruno said Sen. Marc R. Pacheco, D-Taunton, has filed legislation that will allow Wareham to keep its certification despite not meeting the MBLC hours requirement in 2009.

"He sponsored a bill that would essentially give Wareham certification" for 2010, Bruno said. She added that the board's postponement of a decision on Wareham's certification will prevent the library from going in and out of certification in early 2010.

Marcia Griswold, interim library director for Wareham, referred all questions on the library to the town administrator, who did not return a call Wednesday afternoon.

New state rules will help retain area libraries' certification
