"Chief, Sweet Brucey here, yes, this all sounds good, but when will you have a selectman-ass-kissing course for your officers?  I think that's really the most important.  Oh, and if you could have a class on looking the other way when I have road rage problems, that'd be great too."

I like what I'm hearing from him as far as changes being implemented.

But supporting the BoS in their attempt to remove Civil Service, as he did at the OPL mtg, and that other meeting, is difficult for me to accept. Is it just me, but isn't him voicing his support (or lack of, for that matter), inappropriate?

Maybe if he was an option as FT Chief, it would make more sense to me. The changes he's implementing, and suggesting make sense to me whether he's gone in April (or whatever), or not. I hope it all happens with Civil Service in place. Then all the training officers are doing might actually lead toward potential advancement to Chief.

The BoS want to control the decision, like everything else (Westfield, library, etc., etc.)

I'm not a police officer, and these are just my views. I apologize in advance if I'm "missing something"

Would love to hear from Capt C on this. I believe he/you seemed supportive of the interim Chief, but your views on CS/No CS, I don't recall.

Joking aside, Chief Stanley is actually impressing me quite a bit with this presentation.  But at the same time, if anything, this should show people why they need a trained law enforcement professional running the police department, not a group of scumbag selectmen with their heads up their asses.  Vote NO on Article 5.

Chief Stanley is saying that he hasn't seen any political interference from the selectmen.  Of course not.  They like him.  The concern is if there's a chief who they dont like for some arbitrary reason, and they force him/her out.  Slightly different situation....

Yeah, except for the "Harass Poor Sweet Brucey" unit. They're straight out all the time.

He's going to take ALL the credit for any support IChief Stanley gets. "Brucey's so smart, see the great things I bring to the Town", and he "knows who I am", "we're tight, like pb&j"

He's figuring out how he's going to spout off how fantastic Stanley is, and therefore him, by bringing him to Town.
"Hail Sweet Brucey!"  ...I'm gonna puke now.

These are some of the worst interview questions that I've ever heard.  "Tell me about your communication skills".  Basically, that question is "make up some crap that lets us think you'll be our lackey".  Haven't these people heard of behavioral interviewing?  This is ridiculous

Okay, I've hired enough managers in my life and these questions are not the questions they need to ask.

1. We have a divided community and our boards are filled with cronies and lackeys. How do we convince the people this is normal operating procedures?

2. How do you feel about BOS interference in day to day activities?

3. We have been an inferior BOS for quite some time. Do you like us? Do you really really like us?

4. We want to open government to the people, but we also like to hold illegal executive sessions, how do we this without people noticing?

5. Can you grow a nifty goatee like Saguinet.

I agree. The chief has not been here long enough to become at odds with the selectmen so that is why he has not experienced political interference. The selectmen and the Halifax blogger loved former Town Administrator McAuliffe at first too. But as soon as they disagreed on certain issues the war began and he was fired.

The chief is doing a great job and should be commended for that. But he won't be here long and the selectmen know that and they like him so they are not going to interfere. Take the patrol rifle issue for example.  "Patrol Rifle" is police lingo for an assault rifle. The new chief is making sure the patrol rifles are taken out of the station and placed into police cruisers so they are out on the street and immediately accessible to the officers. Out on the street is where the patrol rifles belong because the gangbanger with the AK-47, Tech-9, shotgun, etc., isn't going to wait for the police to go back to the station and get the patrol rifles.  Now with that being said, consider this. What if Chief Joyce decided to put patrol rifles in the cruisers? The selectmen would have fought him tooth and nail and the Halifax blogger would have wrote frightful articles about assault rifle toting police officers with itchy trigger fingers. You know it, and I know it! But since the selectmen do not have a personal grudge with the new chief they are letting him do what he wants. The current chief is not going to be around much longer and his replacement is going to need the protection of civil service to protect him from unjustified punishment for the inevitable conflicts with this board of selectmen.

As for Bruce's apology. Too little, too late!

Something worth pointing out about the chief's slide show presentation is that the problems he identified had to do primarily with issues related to training, equipment, obsolete police station, etc. In the past the board of selectmen would have everybody believe that the problems were with the police officers themselves, excessive force, racism, false arrest, etc. Yes there were and are problems with the police department, but they are not the kind of problems that the selectmen would have everybody believe.
