10 Reasons to visit Onset Village
Onset Village is a small seaside New England town, with a great many years of New England history. We moved to Onset three years ago, renting a house to determine what the commute to Canton and Braintree would be like.

We found that the commute was tolerable, and driving through this beautiful seaside village every morning gave us something to look forward to after a tough day at the office, the ride home and the unbelievable sunset every evening.

We enjoy the village so much that we purchased an old Victorian home here two years ago and have had no regrets about making that tough decision. This is such a great small town community, I just had to write about it, so here goes my top ten reasons for visiting and or residing in Onset.

1 - The beaches here are outstanding, sure in the summer a bit crowded but during the rest of the year especially in the spring and fall you can almost call them your own.

2 - Onset Bay (land side) is incredible, a mixture of various style homes right on the waterfront, small fishing and pleasure boats tied to their moorings, and a beautiful sunset every evening.

3 - Onset Bay (ocean side) looking out into Onset Bay past Wicket's Island, and the channel that leads to the Cape Cod Canal is simply breathtaking, especially in the summer when the channel is very busy with pleasure boats, and many freighters.

4 - Onset Events all summer long including many that are free including the Cape Verdean Festival, The Swan Festival, movies in the park and many others.

5 - Illumination night in August where flares are lit all around Onset Bay on the ocean side, if you have never seen this it's worth seeing at least once in your life.

6 - Of course the Annual Onset Blues Festival, that has expanded from just the afternoon to the evening in some of our fine establishments.

7 - The people that you will meet here are all friendly, enter one of our restaurants or shops and you will be greeted with a courteous hello and friendly conversation. especially if you are here for breakfast....you must eat at Stevie's Pier View Restaurant...tell Dottie the Steve and Dolores sent you.

8 - Being on the Cape without all the traffic, I know people think that you have to go over the bridge to get to the Cape, not true..one visit here will prove that.

9 - Fall, Winter, and Spring.....the population really dies down and you can enjoy the whole town to yourself.

10 - Onset must be heaven...well maybe not but it sure feels like it after the daily grind of working in Boston everyday.

SO come on down or up and pay us a visit, we always have our welcome mat out...who knows you may decide to stay permanently, which has been great for us and I'm sure it will be great for you too.

Visit our website at onset discount travel and enjoy our Onset Links page, we are adding more info to it all the time.

During our time here in this wonderful village, the first person we met more than once was Steve Baptiste, the owner of the Pier View Restaurant. We felt a need to eat breakfast, we enjoyed going to Steve's place, he was the first new friend I made here in Onset, and over the past several years we can become very close friends.

We have met many other wonderful and friendly people as well, and these new relationships make us feel right at home here in Wareham. Dolores is not really a political person, and tries to stay away from the controversy of town government, unfortuately she has to deal with me.
I do try to make our discussions as pleasant as possible.

My brother Jim who passed away two years ago this Saturday was very active in Fairhaven politics, I enjoyed watching him do his work, bringing groups from boths sides of an issue together. My dad never ran for any office, but we were actively involved in many, from Ron Walsh councilman in NB to his election to the School Comitte, then Sparkey Goyette to State Rep. Biff McClean to Senator, and many others, including Ted Kennedy, God rest his soul, early on in his carrier.

I learned one thing from this background that politics is a serious business, and it requires serious people to make it work properly for all.

Over the past several months, I have seen and personally witnessed some interesting reactions by our current leadership including the Board of Selectmen, and their reactions when a citizen dares to ask them a simple question.

I was in the hot seat one night actually in favor of something the BOS supports, and got cut to pieces, lied to and the dismissed like I was someone who had no right to ask a question.

This town belongs to it's people "all of us"!!!

We select 5 people to sit on our Board of Selectman to maintain our right to govern. We hire a Town Administrator to run day to day operations. There is a check and balance in place. And on major issues we the people decide what the right answer should be. That is the beauty of the people

Our town does not belong to any Media organization, broadcast network, blog board, the internet, or any other infomation outlet. THE TOWN BELONGS TO EACH OF US.

I have seen that slipping away over the past several months and I believe it is time we change direction.

I believe that it's time to bring about concensus into our deliberations. Attract points of view from both sides and have an adult discussion. What I have found is usually the best answer to move forward will come somewhere in the middle and both sides will not always agree, but the fact that they had input can live with the final determination.

We don't need to tear apart our government structure, we don't need to continue fighting from the websites, we need serious people to discuss serious issues.

That is the form of government I would bring to Wareham/Onset, a government made up of the people that have strong opinions on both sides of an issue. Sit down and discuss an issue and come to resolution that is best for moving the town forward.

I believe I can have a part in changing how our town is perceived by other towns around us. We can seek businesses to come here, and improve our jobless rate, I feel no person is more happy than having a job and receiving money for their efforts. We can provide those things in Wareham, and improve our stature in the region so the first place a business looks to relocate is here.

Very well written, and I agree that finding a middle ground - give a little, get a little - can work and has worked here for years.  If you are speaking about tearing down our gov't structure meaning the town charter, I have to admit that it is outdated in some phases.  We can work together to fix what needs fixing.  If it isn't broke - don't bother with it.

Sometimes the fighting on the websites is a little childish, but when you can't get your point across it is very frustrating, especially when the selectmen dismiss you as if you are a third grader.  VERY RUDE AND NON PROFESSIONAL.  I agree 100% with you that we need to sit down and discuss issues in an adult manner and to come to resolutions that are best suited for our beautiful town and is to aid our Town and to allow it to move forward.

Steve,
You know how I feel. If you decide this is your calling, you certainly have my vote and my support. Hopefully, you can take the underhanded politics out of the Selectmen activities and help to bring qualified professional people to the open positions in the town!
