the idea of modifying what they want, and then not accepting new bids based on the new requirements, is just plain silly.  How do they think it makes sense to accept one proposal from the contractor who bid on the previous plan?  i hope this consultant can convince them that they're being dumb

i don't recognize voices, and the streaming video is too small for me to make out faces, but this exchange amused me:

Female Selectperson: We need to make sure that we get enough affordable housing so that we can satisfy the 40B requirement
Female at the table: ...and to satisfy the demand that we have

Can anybody give me the names for that gem?

Also, anybody concerned that they need to check with someone else to see if something is ethical?  I can understand needing to check on legalities, but shouldn't they be able to cover the ethics half of that question?  Shouldn't that be part of the job?

I can't believe Cruz didn't show some interest or concern about the guy from Onset, who has been waiting 6 years for a year round liquor license. I don't understand how this other guy jumped ahead of him. I know it's the same building, but he's right it is a new place, with a new name. I don't care if the landlord is the same. I think they said the State  took the license so why didn't it go back into the pool?

Comon Cruz will you freaken wake up!!!!

As Joe Shooter would say "I see another shit storm in my crystal ball and it has Liquor Liscence written all over it" Can you believe they are thinking of issuing a full liquor liscence to a new business without considering the others that they have blown off in the past. Another court battle is on the horizon!!!

#19 2009-08-18 23:05:12

The last business they blew off eventually had to shut their doors..The Blues Cafe waited their turn, ran a trouble free establishment, had no murders committed there, yet still didn't get the liscence!!

I don't understand, Brucey said something about the new owner got the license because he applied before the man who owns Stonebridge. Do these buisness people have to check in every week to see what licenses are available? Shoudn't there be a list so the next person on the list gets the license? The man from Stonebridge has been waiting over 6 years. This doesn't make any sense.

Lizdagnome I have emailed Cruz twice, nice emails just wanted some information, not one response.

I was at the last license give away. It was between the Blues Cafe,Stonebridge, and Selernos banquet hall.

The Blues Cafe had been waiting the longest Salernos was a new business and not even open full time.

Money and campaign contributions win every time.

The Blues Cafe told the Selectmen that they could not continue to operate closing 10 weeks a year.

They chose Salernos and the Blues Cafe closed.Grant and Michelle gave it their best and they were good people to the community, however not political campaign contributors.

You all know how this stuff works....just like the 30 Million dollar disaster about to happen...somebody's getting greased.

I was shocked that a new restaurant would get preference over a restaurant that had been waiting for a license for 6 years. Something is definitely wrong with this system. These small business people are the heart and soul of Wareham. These selectman should be doing everything they can to make owning a small business in Wareham is a positive experience.

If what you say is true about the money and campaign contributions, then the people that have been passed over should be out in front of town hall protesting.

I remember from that meeting the Selectmen went on and on about additional licenses coming soon.

Stonebridge is a fine restaurant not a bar room. They have run a very good business and deserve a license.

They put the blame squarely on the State level and local rep (Susan Gifford).  The claim is they only have a limited number to grant and we need more.

Now, I wonder if this is a Brand New license or a transfer. A transfer would make the new owners liable for any debts to liquor companies, food suppliers ect that the previous owners had accumulated. A new license would give the new owners a clean slate to start from.  A transfer would start the new owners in a hole created by irresponsible prior owners. How fair is this. As I remember, the license bestowed upon the new owners of Wickets Pub and Inn located in Onset was a transferred license, making them responsible for thousands and thousands of dollars in debts that they never created. Why wouldn't they get the same treatment as the Webster Hall owners?? Having access to certain people in the alcohol and food supplier business, I can assure you that the previous owners have created such a mess, but the new owners won"t feel it like the nice folks at Wickets have and still feel. Nice move BOS!!! Maybe someone will read this and relay some info to the Wickets people, and maybe Wareham can answer another court case at the expense of its tax payers. Whats fair for one should be fair for all. And as for those people that have been waiting for years for a license, how can this be, the BOS have issued many new licenses within the past few years at the new mall. Why did they not take care of the little business person who has applied and been denied ?? My guess is the BOS just don't give a crap.

I have to comment on the Salerno's issue, firstly the Salerno's have owned and operated Marc Anthony's pizza for many many many years. They do their best to stay out of politics (note: Marc Salerno hosted both candidates this past election season and had both their signs on his front lawn). Unlike Steve Baptiste who catered only to Cruz, and look where that got him!
I understand issuing a license to a new establishment that is an expansion of an existing establishment and while I feel badly about the Blues Cafe because I really liked it, I do feel the need to clarify the issue with Salerno's. However, I cannot understand what a landlord has to do with anything and it seems that there should be a waiting list, first come first served (no pun intended).

I'm a compulsive list maker. This list might be a handout or used for talking points. Please edit, revise, ignore or reject as you wish.

                                                       TAKE BACK WAREHAM
                                                            The Top Ten List

  Take back a sense of a united community.

  Take back an atmosphere of civility in government. Stop the verbal abuse of citizens by town officials during meetings or in newspapers.

  Take back a sense of respect for our town employees. Fill the many empty positions with qualified full-time employees. Hire directors and managers who value their employees.

  Take back strong support for our police. Retain civil service for our police chief, and reorganize Crime Watch as a police endeavor.

  Take back a sense of transparency in government. Stop secretive computer audits and illegal executive meetings.

  Take back a sense of support for local business. Institute a five-year plan to draw new business to town. End the harassment of local business: arguments over sewer tie-ins, legal battles over street use, unfair distribution of liquor licenses – all practices which drive business away.

  Take back a sense of honesty in government. Replace projects like the Swift’s Beach fiasco and the current Westfield debacle with needed town projects that are approved at town meeting. Establish strong working committees on senior housing, library usage and rail-line connections.

  Take back a cherished tradition of town meeting. Make the necessary changes to bring town meeting into the twenty-first century.  Keep all mayors somewhere else.

  Take back a sense of compromise. Avoid lengthy lawsuits such as the library vendetta. Use legal remedies as a last resort and reduce the current inventory of 39 lawsuits against the town.

  Take back a sense of fiscal responsibility. Keep spending within the guidelines established at town meeting.

gogateman,
Would you mind if I copy this list and use it in future meetings? It is very good and hits the highlights of what Take Back Wareham is all about. So much of what I envision for this town is in that list and so much different than what we have right now.

Thank you so much and I hope you allow me to use it.

Use it any way that helps. Add or subtract as needed. Note that I have edited it because it is the twenty-first century.  I really am getting old.

I think we should use gogatemen's list, but your quote should be read first, as the condensed version.  If correctly spoken and read with determination and deep feeling this could get people to stop and listen.  Then.....put out the list (wish list) to improve our town by improving COMMUNICATION!  This is a great start and I hope this isn't set aside.  I think it will capture the attention of more people than you think.  It could also be printed on large posters and put in the windows of as many stores in Wareham as possible.  I don't think there is one businessman that would disagree with it's content.  You both have put this in print in an amazing manor.  Keep up the good work.
