I truly am only guessing, Rob. I have heard nothing from anyone. For sake of discussion- let me pose this hypothetical question. If Mike and his family were being protected by the government wouldn't all communication from him stop ?

If he's in the witness protection program, possibily. But there are ways to get a message out without compromising a person's location. FYI - I am not saying he's in the witness protection program. I have no knowledge of that whatsoever.

Len, I'm not certain many people do have the explanation. I have spoken to a lot of people who know Mike. No one seems to know what is going on beyond the fact that after National Night Out he and his family moved away. I don't think moving away without telling anyone why would be a matter for the police. Now if he was forced to move under some sort of threat, that would definitely be a matter for law enforcement authorities.
Oh, well, that explains it. If Mike did indeed head for the hills after going to National Night Out, it was probably because he saw this hideous sight:
